Learners at Three Bridges School have been making a meaningful contribution to environmental research after taking part in the Trash Free Trails Citizen Science Expedition, helping to protect the local environment while developing their understanding of sustainability and environmental responsibility.
Organised by Assistant Principal for Curriculum and Education, Kat, the three-part expedition took place on 10th, 17th and 24th June, giving learners the opportunity to work alongside Leigh Rose, Community Coordinator for Trash Free Trails in Cornwall.
Throughout the project, learners explored the importance of caring for the natural environment by collecting data on the types of litter most commonly found along the Cornish coast path. Acting as citizen scientists, they carefully recorded their findings, contributing valuable information that will be used by a leading university to investigate which food and drink industry brands are most commonly associated with litter. The research will help inform future sustainability initiatives and manufacturing policies aimed at reducing environmental waste.
The project provided learners with a unique opportunity to apply their learning beyond the classroom while developing teamwork, observation and critical thinking skills. It also strengthened their understanding of how individual actions can make a positive difference to both local communities and the wider environment.
Three Bridges School was delighted to welcome Leigh to the school as part of the ongoing partnership with Trash Free Trails, sharing knowledge and inspiring learners to become active environmental champions.
Kat, Assistant Principal for Curriculum and Education, said:
“The Trash Free Trails project has given our learners an incredible opportunity to contribute to genuine scientific research while developing a deeper understanding of environmental responsibility. It has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm, teamwork and commitment throughout each stage of the expedition. We are extremely grateful to Leigh and the Trash Free Trails team for supporting this initiative and helping our learners recognise the important role they can play in protecting the environment for future generations.”
Three Bridges School is incredibly proud of everyone who took part in the Citizen Science Expedition. The dedication and enthusiasm shown by learners throughout the project perfectly reflect the school’s values, demonstrating how education can empower young people to make a positive impact on the world around them.
