Jodie Darlington Learning Support Assistant at Three Bridges Education
I joined Three Bridges Education (3B’s) at the end of 2023 as a Learning Support Assistant (LSA). Prior to this, I worked as a lecturer at Cornwall College and as an NVQ assessor at a private academy, where I taught hairdressing. I’ve been in the hairdressing industry since leaving school in 1996 and earned my teaching qualification in 2010.
Throughout my time teaching at Cornwall College and the academy, I worked with learners of all ages and abilities. This experience gave me a range of transferable skills—such as empathy, communication, and the ability to adapt my approach to meet individual needs—that I now use daily in my role at 3B’s.
After 28 years in the hairdressing industry, I decided to transition into teaching full-time because I wanted a new challenge. What I enjoyed most about teaching was helping learners achieve their goals and become more independent. However, over time, my role became increasingly focused on paperwork and meetings, which led me to seek a fresh opportunity. That’s when I applied to 3B’s.
The Principal and staff have been incredibly supportive, making sure I felt comfortable and confident in my new role. I absolutely love working at 3B’s—every day is different, and I look forward to continuing my career here.
What I love most about my job is helping learners overcome challenges, watching them grow in confidence, and develop new skills. At 3B’s, students have fantastic opportunities to express themselves and experience something new every day. While the role can be challenging at times, the support from my colleagues is unwavering, and I continue to learn alongside the learenrs each day.
Carrie-Anne Hodge – Wellbeing Lead at Three Bridges
I joined Three Bridges in September 2019 as a Learning Support Assistant. From the start, I’ve enjoyed the challenge of working with different learners, helping them navigate the school day and preparing them to engage in learning.
With a passion for self-development, I began taking courses in my spare time, particularly focusing on mental health, an area I felt I needed to understand better. In 2021, I successfully applied for a role as a Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) with a specialism in learner wellbeing. Since then, I’ve continued to expand my knowledge by completing various mental health and wellbeing courses.
When Melrose acquired Three Bridges, even more career development opportunities became available. I applied for and was appointed as the Wellbeing Lead for Three Bridges. In this role, I support both staff and learners in all aspects of wellbeing and mental health. My employer has been incredibly supportive, funding my qualifications and helping me find courses that enhance my skills. I am now a certified Mental Health First Aider with suicide prevention qualifications.
As Wellbeing Lead, I conduct regular check-ins with staff and learners to ensure they have access to the support they need. I also organize wellbeing events and work closely with the Transition teacher, delivering sessions on wellbeing, the Duke of Edinburgh Award, and other subjects as needed.
Before joining Three Bridges, I worked in care, supporting people with cognitive impairment and dementia. Many of the skills I developed in that role, such as patience, empathy, and care, have been invaluable in my current position. I have also gained new skills along the way, and I feel privileged to do what I love.
Health and wellbeing are my passion, and I am proud to promote a positive wellbeing culture at our school. Ensuring that staff feel valued and supported is essential, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute to their wellbeing as well as that of our learners.
Emma Carlyon
I began working at Three Bridges in 2014 as a Learning Support Assistant and through continuous professional development I became a Higher Level Teaching Assistant in 2019.
In 2022 I completed my Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training, moving on to Qualified Teaching and Learning Status (QTLS).Â
I teach the Science curriculum, Duke of Edinburgh, Forest school, and have recently started to develop our new Horticulture programme for the school to start being self-sufficient. I have accessed many CPD opportunities to ensure I am up to date on new resources and topics that support the curriculum.
The support I receive from all staff members has made me want to explore other opportunities within school such as being the Educational Visits coordinator which has enabled me to plan exciting trips around Cornwall and visit sports providers such as The Cornwall Sailing Trust and B.F Adventure.
I recently became the Assistant Principal here and I am excited about my new role within school.
I love what I do, and I am invested in making a difference to all the young people’s lives at our school, but also helping the staff reach their goals and aspirations here with us at Three Bridges. I strive to try and be the best in everything I do, and this will not change in my new role because its not just for me it is also for the young people at school. I love working in partnership with stakeholders and believe together we can make a difference; it is important for me to enable everyone to have an opinion, and choice to then make plans going forward which I hope benefits everybody involved in those decisions.
Ben Thorpe
I am a musician and songwriter, and when I’m not at Three Bridges, you can find me performing acoustically around Cornwall. I’ve released seven records and have been playing music since I was 14.
I started at Three Bridges in 2017 as a Learning Support Assistant. In 2019, I became a Higher Level Teaching Assistant, and by 2020, I had completed my Level 6 in Professional Practice and a Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training. In 2021, I became a Tutor.
I create music with our learners and teach a variety of subjects including English, Maths, Science, ICT, P.E., Pathway for Adulthood (PfA), and PSHE. My next goal is to complete my QTLS!
I love being part of Three Bridges, which is why I’m now entering my 8th year here. The problem-solving nature of the roles I’ve held, and the pride I take in watching our learners flourish and reach their potential, keeps me motivated every day.
